Deep dive into cultural roots
Ulaanbaatar is far more than Mongolia's capital — it is a living crossroads of Buddhist heritage, nomadic tradition, and centuries-old pilgrimage routes. This three-day city pilgrimage invites you to move through that heritage slowly and intentionally, visiting the sacred monasteries and temples that survived revolution, attending morning prayer ceremonies, and pausing in meditation halls where lamas have chanted for generations.
On the first two days we immerse ourselves in the heart of the city: the great Gandantegchinlen Monastery, the Choijin Lama Temple Museum, the Bogd Khan Palace, and the sweeping viewpoint of Zaisan Hill. On the afternoon of Day 2 we travel south to the wooded slopes of Bogd Khan Mountain to visit the poignant ruins of Manzushir Monastery, destroyed in the 1937 purges and now surrounded by birch forest and silence.
Day 3 takes us into the wild granite landscape of Gorkhi-Terelj National Park, 80 km from the city. Here we visit the iconic Turtle Rock formation and climb to the Aryapala Meditation Temple perched on a hillside above the valley. The evening is spent in a traditional ger camp under the vast Mongolian sky — an experience of stillness that no city hotel can replicate. All commentary is provided in Mongolian by IWJ's experienced spiritual guides.
